Developing Successful Application Essays

Application essays represent your best opportunity to directly influence your chances of admission to the college of your dreams. The essays are the only time the admissions committee will hear your own voice, and are the only chance for you to tell your unique and compelling personal story.
Don’t squander the opportunity! By taking the time to work with an experienced VHA staff member, your essay will stand out from the crowd.
Writing a memorable college essay is a process - it doesn’t just happen overnight. Some steps include:
- Examining essays from past high school seniors, and determining the attributes of successful examples
- Participating in a series of brainstorming activities to help develop the ideas and stories best suited for use in your essays
- Drafting a variety of essays, receiving feedback (including peer review where appropriate), and revising in response to feedback
Finally, after a sequence of several in-studio sessions and at-home assignments, you’ll be ready to submit polished and powerful essays that will impress any college admissions officer.
